Director Ben Wheatley is quickly becoming one of the most interesting filmmakers in England. From Down Terrace to Kill List to Sightseers, Wheatley has crafted a body of work that isn’t easily pigeonholed, but is filled with interesting characters and compelling situations. The filmmaker looks to continue that trend in his latest, a trippy art house period piece entitled A Field in England. The feature may be his most ambitious to date if this trailer is any indication.
The film follows a group of deserters during the English Civil War. They’re captured by an alchemist, who then puts them to work searching for a hidden treasure located somewhere in a massive mushroom field. From there, it all gets really strange.
It’s hard to know what to make of A Field in England from this clip – but what we can tell is that Wheatley is continuing to refine his visual style. The cinematography here is stunning and the black-and-white film stock certainly helps put us back in a different era. The film employs several British comics (Julian Barratt and Reece Shearsmith) amongst the cast, but we’re not entirely convinced this is a comedy.
It appears we’ll have to wait until the film makes its U.S. debut later this year (thanks to Drafthouse Pictures) to see what’s really going on in this field – but given Wheatley’s previous efforts, we’re going to be there day one. He’s earned that.
