Holy Bat-fleck! Ben Affleck Picked to Play Batman in 'Man of Steel' Sequel

Aug 22, 2013

In a bold move, the man once rumored to be directing a Justice League movie for Warner Bros. is now playing Bruce Wayne himself in the Man of Steel sequel (unofficially Batman vs. Superman) for the studio. Affleck, who once played the Marvel hero Daredevil (see above) and then played Superman actor George Reeves, brings superhero chops to the table, for sure -- but are they Batman chops?

Going from Christian Bale to Ben Affleck is a tricky move, mainly because Affleck is a different actor. He brings a different set of skills to the film, and probably more charisma. More of a Keaton Batman than a Bale Batman, and that'll be a nice change of pace. What this also says is that Batman will be older, and maybe funnier, looser and less depressing, depending on where they decide to take his personality. Is he cranky and bitter or is he living carefree? And if Affleck is going to throw down with Henry Caviil, he'll need to start Bat-benching immediately.

But seriously, kudos to Affleck for putting himself out there like this. Here's a guy who won a Best Picture Oscar last year and he's following it up by playing Batman in arguably the biggest superhero movie of 2015. Gutsy move, but one he's been after for a while. Does this mean he's back in the mix to direct Justice League, or maybe even the next solo Batman movie?

Director Zack Snyder thinks Affleck adds a new dynamic to the role, and that his age benefits him. “Ben provides an interesting counterbalance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”

What do you think about this move? Good? Bad? Bonkers?

Definitely bonkers, right?

More as it drops.
