'Before Midnight' Gets a First Trailer, Though Fans Probably Shouldn't Watch It

Mar 28, 2013

Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are two of the finest films ever made about life, love, time and all the distractions between. Before Midnight, however, transforms the entire trilogy from "Man, I love those movies" to "Holy crap, what did we as a species do to deserve to get a trilogy this good?" Before Midnight is sublime filmmaking. It will unquestionably be one of the best films of 2013.

You probably shouldn't watch the trailer, though.

The great appeal of Midnight, like Sunset before it, is its wild card nature. The original Before Sunset did not demand a sequel. It was a seemingly simple film about two people sharing an incredible day together. It's not about setting up questions to be answered in a sequel, and thankfully the sequels aren't about giving answers to questions you never asked. Watching Before Midnight is less "Okay, time to watch a movie" and more "Okay, time to catch up with an old friend after years apart."

That's why watching the first trailer for the film feels like it's spoiling the process. Not that it's giving away crucial, mysterious plot points, rather it's undercutting the joy of discovery, of catching up and learning just what your old friends have been up to this whole time. If you're a fan of the first two films, having seen (and loved, loved, loved) Before Midnight, I'd implore you to not press play on the below trailer, to trust that it's precisely whatever you want it to be, and that you should see it as soon as physically possible.

You've waited this long to catch up with Jesse and Celine, why not wait just a little bit longer for its May 24, 2013 release?
