More Awards Surprises! 'Bridge of Spies' and 'Carol' Lead BAFTA Nominations

Jan 08, 2016

Proving this year is truly up for grabs when it comes to the big film awards, the BAFTAs -- or the British equivalent of the Academy Awards -- doled out their nominations for the year, favoring Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies and Carol, both receiving nine nods each, including Best Film.

Joining them in the Best Film category are The Big Short, The Revenant and Spotlight, with more blockbuster-y favorites like Mad Max: Fury Road and The Martian finding nods in the technical categories (Mad Max snagged seven) and, with The Martian, the Best Director (Ridley Scott) and Best Actor (Matt Damon) categories, too.

Other awards season favorites like Brooklyn and The Danish Girl found nods in the Best British Film category (among others), while the wild card Ex Machina continues to slip into the big race with nods for Best British Film, Best Supporting Actress (Alicia Vikander) and Best Original Screenplay (Alex Garland).

And even Star Wars: The Force Awakens found its way to some nominations, scoring nods for Production Design, Sound, Original Music and Special Visual Effects.
