Just a few weeks ago The Hunger Games made huge waves in Hollywood for having earned a hefty $152 million over the course of its release, giving it the third highest grossing opening weekend in history.
Now The Hunger Games is in fourth place.
Marvel's The Avengers not only knocked it down a rung, it decimated the #1 spot that previously belonged to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. To put things in perspective, last week the gap between the highest opening weekend and the second highest opening weekend (The Dark Knight) was a relatively close $11 million. Now the gap between first and second is a wide $38 million.
Update with final number: Disney's The Avengers earned $207,438,708 over the past weekend ($7 million higher than the previous estimate). Not only is that a new opening weekend record, it's also a fastest to cross $200 million record. And that's just in the US. The film actually opened internationally 10 days ago, which brings the film's global box office haul to a crazy $648 million. In 10 days. Apparently people like superheroes. Who knew?
