James Cameron is Making Three 'Avatar' Sequels at the Same Time, Says Sigourney Weaver

Jun 26, 2012

If you're a fan of the highest grossing movie of all time, then get ready for three more sequels. Yup, according to Sigourney Weaver -- who'll be returning to the Avatar franchise despite the outcome of her character in the first film -- James Cameron is currently prepping to shoot three Avatar sequels back-to-back-to-back. She'll be starting her work on Avatar 2, 3 and 4 after she completes a run on the series Political Animals, followed by a short stint in a Christopher Durang play. Weaver added that she has no idea how long production will take, only that her job is to "just show up."

The question now is whether there's even enough interest in three Avatar sequels, and/or whether that interest will be there once Avatar 2 finally rolls into theaters sometime in late 2014 or 2015 (it was recently moved from its Christmas 2014 release date). What Cameron will have to do is reinvent the franchise so that audiences will have a vested interest in it moving forward.

By the time Avatar 2 hits, 3D won't be as mysterious and glamorous as it was when Cameron re-introduced it to us with Avatar. So, he'll have to up his own ante considerably in order to give folks a reason to gulp down more Avatar stories to justify how much they'll spend to make three at the same time. Granted, 20th Century Fox won't be spending as much because the three films will shoot at the same time, but that just puts more pressure on the story and on part two. If Cameron doesn't nail Avatar 2, will audiences even care about Avatar 3 and 4

What about now? How much do you want to see three more Avatar movies? And what does Cameron have to do to keep you interested in this franchise going forward?
