If you thought losing that lawsuit over the title Age of the Hobbits was going to slow down the Asylum, guess again – the studio that earns its bread and butter by making cheap knockoffs of high profile movies is back in action with two new titles.
The studio will look to cash in on two of this summer’s high profile sci-fi adventures -- M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth and Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim -- when it releases AE: Apocalypse Earth, and the even less imaginatively titled Atlantic Rim. We’ve got trailers for both below.
AE: Apocalypse Earth will look to capture an audience of confused movie lovers expecting to see Will and Jaden Smith returning to an abandoned – and hostile – Earth at some point in the future. What viewers will instead see is Adrian Paul and a group of other survivors wandering a foreign planet after escaping an alien invasion on Earth. Poor Adrian Paul, he deserved better -- I mean, he was Duncan MacLeod in the Highlander TV series for crying out loud! That show was good! Now he’s stuck making awful sequel movies and working for the Asylum. Honestly, the whole thing looks more like Avatar than it does the Shyamalan film to us. See for yourself.
Atlantic Rim, on the other hand, actually looks watchable. We know it’s fun to bag on the Asylum for its low budget rip-offs, but let’s be fair – the production values and quality of the rip-offs have gone up pretty significantly over the years. This is particularly noticeable in Atlantic Rim, which sports some decent-looking FX work.
Sure, no one’s going to mistake this for del Toro’s film – but watching this trailer has convinced me that I’d actually pay (less than $5…) to see this movie. How could I not when the trailer features lines like “he is a reckless liability” followed up with the response “he’s the best we’ve got”? Plus, any film that has Naughty by Nature frontman Treach in a leading role is totally worth my time. If Treach is working for the Asylum, I guess that answers the age-old question about whether he’s still down with O.P.P. or not…
Apparently, Atlantic Rim may be getting a title change to From the Sea – so maybe the studio is still a little gunshy after that whole Hobbit thing. Anyway, check out the clip below and let us know what you make of it.
