Surprise: We're Also Getting An Animated 'Deadpool' Next Year

May 10, 2017

Deadpool spent years and years in development hell trying to become a movie over at Fox. It wasn't until test footage from the hypothetical movie leaked online that the studio finally flipped the switch on the greenlight. It hit theaters on February 12, 2016. It would go on to make over $783 million world wide and change the entire conversation about R-rated superhero movies. Obviously a sequel was going to happen as quickly as possible, but 2018 will see us getting even more Deadpool than expected.

News has just broken that in addition to the David Leitch-directed Deadpool 2, the Fox-owned FXX Network will be creating a Deadpool TV show. It will be animated and comes from Atlanta creators Donald Glover and Stephen Glover.

As of right now FX hasn't confirmed whether or not this animated Deadpool will be voiced by live-action Deadpool Ryan Reynolds. Glover could easily find a new person to give voice to the merc with a mouth, though, and it wouldn't be that jarring. Deadpool is a unique Marvel character that can easily jump around in continuity, and whose meta awareness about everything around him allows for things to get very cheeky and self-aware. We're talking about the kind of comic world where it would actually make sense if the animated Deadpool opened with a scene of the character watching the live-action Deadpool and making fun of Ryan Reynolds.

Oh, and if you're worried about this being a kids show, don't. Marvel Television chief Jeph Loeb - who recently worked with FX on creating the hit X-Men show Legion - said it will be "a groundbreaking show in adult animation." Now we just have to wait until 2018 to see what he means by that.
