Angelina Jolie Maleficent concept art

We love concept art around here. We also love that concept artists are finally allowed to publicize their portfolios for a movie after it has opened in theaters. Recently this has given us clearer looks at the aliens in Edge of Tomorrow, alternate versions of Godzilla, and even some unused designs for Sentinels in X2: X-Men United. And now the latest bits of alternate reality art to be liberated are Steffen Reichstadt's alternate designs for Angelina Jolie in Maleficent.

In the actual movie they went with a design that was basically just cheek bones so high and sharp they look like they'd cut anyone who got too close, but these other tests keep her face more intact and emphasize horns instead. And, as striking as the used design is, we're a little disappointed we didn't get to see one of these versions on the big screen. The stunning beauty of Jolie's face seems to be holding away the evil lurking behind her, making for a wonderful and instantly striking design.

Alas, it was not meant to be, but at least we have these looks at what could have been.

And here's an alternate version of Maleficent as a young girl. More versions are available at Steffen Reichstadt's site.

And as a bonus, here is a hilarious short film about what the pitch meeting for Maleficent must have looked like:
