'Anchorman 2' Makes History by Returning to Theaters with All New Jokes

Feb 21, 2014

Ron BurgundyRemixes have been a staple of the music industry for years, but the idea of remixing a movie is still a relatively uncommon thing. Movies get reboots, reimaginings and alternate cuts, but rarely do they get rebuilt from the ground up. That could change if the newest version of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is a success.

The film, which is still in a few theaters, is getting a total rehaul and rerelease next Friday. What might make you want to revisit a film you just saw a few months ago? How about an entirely new set of jokes?

Director Adam McKay reveals that the new cut of the film, now called Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues: Super-Sized R-Rated Version, will feature roughly 95% new material in the form of alternate takes that wound up on the cutting-room floor.

McKay tells The New York Times how the idea came about:

“We started talking and realized, we can replace every single joke in the movie with another joke."

This is possible thanks to the improvisational nature of the film’s shooting, which finds star Will Ferrell and company willing to try many alternate takes with completely different gags until they find just the right one. McKay reports that the 5% of the original version’s material was just stuff that had to be kept for narrative continuity.

Of course, it does raise the question: if this material was so great, why was it cut in the first place? There’s a reason why scenes are deleted – they’re usually not good enough to be in the final print for some reason. Will fans want to sit through an entire movie (and a longer version at that) filled with what the creative folks behind the scenes originally regarded as the B material? McKay isn’t too worried.

“This is a stitched up, Frankenstein version. You’ll either love it or hate it.”

Fans will have a week to decide, as that’s how long Paramount says the new version will be in theaters. Don’t fret if you miss it, though – it’ll be coming to home video, along with the original theatrical version, on April 1.
