UPDATE: Sarah Gadon (A Dangerous Method, Cosmopolis) has confirmed to ETCanada that she will join The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, and many are assuming she will become the next Mary Jane Watson. There's no confirmation of this, but after Shailene Woodley was cut from the second movie (see original post below), it was believed that she wouldn't return to the role because of scheduling conflicts. So is Gadon our new Mary Jane? We shall know soon enough...

With the recent revelation that Sony intends to make at least four Andrew Garfield Amazing Spider-Man movies, it’s no surprise to learn that there will be some shifting of the narrative timeline. We saw the same thing happen when Peter Jackson revealed that he was turning The Hobbit into a trilogy.
The first casualty of this narrative shifting is Shailene Woodley’s Mary Jane Watson. The actress was featured prominently in early set photos from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but we’ve now learned (from Woodley herself) that Peter Parker’s love interest won’t actually appear on-screen until the third film in the series.
Woodley offered up the following thoughts about the change in plans during an interview with Entertainment Weekly for this week's issue:
“Of course I'm bummed, but I'm a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason... based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing (Mary Jane) until the next film."
Holding off on revealing Mary Jane until the third film is a pretty interesting choice, given how important the character is in the Spider-Man mythology. Guess this means we’re going to be seeing lots more of Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey…
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due out on May 2, 2014. Expect the third and fourth installments in 2016 and 2018.
