The Hateful Eight

Quentin Tarantino's highly-anticipated eighth film, The Hateful Eight, is set in the scenic and snowy wilds of Wyoming after the Civil War. As teased in the trailers so far, the wilderness landscapes look absolutely spectacular on the big screen and Tarantino has gone to great lengths to ensure a unique viewing experience is available for discerning moviegoers.

To begin with, Tarantino wanted to shoot the movie in a widescreen 65mm format, and decided upon Ulta Panavision 70, using anamorphic camera lenses that had not been employed since 1966. Ultra Panavision 70 and its fellow marketing brand MGM Camera 65 were only utilized on a select few, large-scale movies such as Ben-Hur, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and The Battle of the Bulge. Panavision was fully on board with Tarantino's plans.

Now that the movie is heading for theatrical release, specific plans have been announced to showcase the movie in its original, intended, widescreen splendor in 100 theaters located in 44 markets across the country.

It may be difficult to imagine what a movie shot in 70mm looks like on the big screen. But don't worry; Samuel L. Jackson, who stars as a bounty hunter, is happy to help explain why it matters.

To recap: The 70mm "roadshow" version of The Hateful Eight will open in select locations in select cities (see list below) on Friday, December 25, as reported by Variety. Tickets are now available

The report also says that "Tarantino and cast members will be touring the country making surprise appearances in select cities at 70mm roadshow showings." The "non-roadshow" version of the movie, which also stars Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, Demian Bichir, and Channing Tatum, will then open nationwide on December 31.
