Rumor: 'Gravity' Director Alfonso Cuaron Offered 'The Shining' Prequel

May 22, 2014

When you win an Oscar for Best Director, job offers come flying in at a fast and furious rate, which is what Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron is currently experiencing firsthand.

Warner Bros. seems very hyped on working with the filmmaker on another project, and it's now reportedly offered him two big gigs based on existing properties. We reported earlier that he's been approached about directing the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but now rumors are circulating that he’s also been offered a spookier project as well.

The guys over at The Schmoes Know report that sources tell them Cuaron has been approached about directing a prequel to Stanley Kubrick’s classic haunted-hotel flick The Shining. The Overlook Hotel has been a project kicking around at Warner Bros. for quite some time now, but Cuaron’s involvement could certainly get the feature moving full-speed ahead.

Of course, the question remains: does the world really need a Harry Potter spin-off or a prequel to The Shining? We say no – although the idea of a Shining prequel is not totally out of left field. King himself wrote an extended prologue titled Before the Play that was eventually excised from the novel. In it, he gave a brief overview of the Overlook’s history from its construction through to the start of the story. Plus, as the countless ghosts Danny and his family encounter proves, bad things were happening at the Overlook long before Jack Torrance ever darkened its doorway. These things would probably make for an interesting film in their own right.

What do you guys think? Would you prefer to see Cuaron tackle Harry Potter or Stephen King? Personally, we think the best plan here is to let the filmmaker continue to make original films that appeal to his aesthetic sensibilities, but this is probably why we write about movies instead of green-lighting them…
