Last week we reported that Harry Potter director David Yates was taking on Tarzan as his next big project. Today we’ve got the first casting skinny for the king of the jungle’s latest adventure.
If Yates gets his wish, True Blood star Alexander Skarsgard will be joining performers like Johnny Weissmuller and Christopher Lambert on the list of men who’ve been Lord of the Apes. Variety reports that the 6’4” Skarsgard is the director’s first choice for the role of John Clayton III.
Variety also shares some of the plot details for the project, which hasn’t been officially greenlit yet.
“Years afte he’s [Tarzan] re-assimilated into society, he's asked by Queen Victoria to investigate the goings-on in the Congo. Tarzan teams with an ex-mercenary named George Washington Williams to save the Congo from a fierce warlord who controls a massive diamond mine.”
News in the same article also indicates that Samuel L. Jackson is being considered for the part of Williams. We were sort of indifferent to the idea of a new Tarzan movie when it was originally mentioned, but this casting has us a whole lot more interested…
Should Yates get his wish (and given how much money he’s made Warner Bros. with the Harry Potter entries he was involved in, he should), Skarsgard will have beaten out Henry Cavill, Charlie Hunnam and Tom Hardy on the list of potential leading me tied to the in-development project.
No official offers have been made and both Warner Bros. and Skarsgard’s agent have declined to comment, so we’ll have to take a “wait and see” approach as this all plays out. Keep it tuned here, as we’ll be bringing you more on this unfolding story as details emerge. In the meantime, let us know what you think of both potential casting rumors and the plot in the comment section below.
