Fans of Election and Sideways (and of Alexander Payne's dry, emotional and often wickedly dark sense of humor) will find plenty to love in this first trailer for his new film, The Descendants, starring George Clooney as an out-of-touch husband and father of two girls who must take control of the family and re-establish relationships with his daughters when their mother (and his wife) suffers a boating accident. Based on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings, The Descendants looks like the perfect blend of Payne's two most successful movies, Election and Sideways, in that it features a lot of adult-on-teenager humor, as well as focuses on a lead male character who's sort of lost his way in life and is doing his best to get back on the right track. There's also a good deal of About Schmidt in there, too, with the relationships between father and daughter. A lot of Payne's familiar themes are running through this thing big time.
The trailer also delivers one heckuva Oscar punch, doesn't it? The mood, the music, the quirky-but-touching relatable moments, and what looks to be a fun, everyman character for George Clooney to play (and subsequently land a nomination for). iTunes Trailers debuted the trailer, and you can also see it right here. Let us know what you think. Does this thing have early Oscar buzz written all over it, or what?
