'Airplane vs. Volcano' Looks Like It May Dethrone 'Pompeii' As the Best Worst Volcano-Survival Movie of 2014

Mar 05, 2014

Airplane vs. Volcano is the latest masterpiece from schlockmeisters the Asylum (Sharknado), and unlike most of their movies, it looks like it's taking itself fairly seriously-- and we actually respect that. But first, let's get the amazing plot description out of the way:

When a commercial airliner is trapped within a ring of erupting volcanoes, the passengers and crew must find a way to survive – without landing.

Yes! It's like Speed, but where the terrorist is Mother Nature and the bomb is the ring of fire. It's also an amazing plot because we're very curious how exactly you keep raising the stakes in a versus movie about something that seems like a pretty one-sided fight. Why can't they just fly the plane in a different direction? Is there a terrorist on board that hijacks it? Can the volcanoes possess the plane? Why not just crash-land in the ocean and break out those life preservers?

All these questions and more will be answered soon enough when Airplane vs. Volcano, starring former Superman Dean Cain, lord of taking straight-to-Syfy movies seriously, is unleashed in theaters (yes, this is a theatrical movie, at least according to the Asylum's website) on March 28, 2014.

But seriously, how great would it be if Airplane vs. Volcano ends up being a better volcano-survival movie than Pompeii? Our fingers are crossed.
