Adam Wingard Confirms He Almost Directed 'Fast and Furious 8'

Sep 16, 2016

Earlier this year a short list of the three potential directors for the eighth Fast and Furious movie was run online by The Hollywood Reporter. It included F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job) and Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk), which isn't too huge of a leap since both have been at the helm of bigger budget action movies. The third name on the list, however, was a pleasant surprise. Adam Wingard, director of You're Next and The Guest, isn't exactly a Hollywood action director (yet). This indie horror director's name being in that kind of a mix was a big deal.

Obviously the job ended up going to F. Gary Gray, but just how close was Wingard to actually making the movie? When we spoke to him this week for his thrilling new horror movie Blair Witch, we wondered if he could shed a bit of light on this shortlist business.

As it turns out, he was a lot closer to landing the job than any of us realized, with Wingard telling us, "As far as I know, if Vin Diesel hadn't kind of taken over the whole thing and picked his choice, which was F. Gary Gray, I would be – or at least there's a very good chance I would be - doing that movie right now. It was a definitive thing. It was very exciting, too."

Wingard doesn't have any sour grapes about losing out on the incredibly high profile job, though. He elaborated, "To me it was just as good not getting it. Even just being on one of those lists does so much for your career and it elevates you to such a level. To me I was like, 'Hey, this is a win-win situation. If I get the film, I get to do a huge car chase movie. If I don't, I still get the bump from it. It's one of those things.'"

Speaking of Wingard-related huge car chase movies, we then asked if he and his frequent collaborator and Blair Witch co-writer Simon Barrett would ever make the car chase movie they were developing a few years ago that was planned to be one long chase through the city of Seoul, South Korea.

Adam Wingard: "Not that one specifically, but we will do something big and action-y."

Simon Barrett: "We will, just not that one. I think [producer] Keith Calder was saying a Chinese film company may want to buy that script and make that movie, and I was like 'Dude, I don't care.' It was called Nonstop."

Wingard: "Before Non-Stop! We didn't have a hyphen."

Barrett: "That should have been the first sign we weren't going to make that movie. It was going to be a nonstop chase, but the script was never 100% there, and the reality of making that movie with the budget we had at the time was for sure not 100% there. And then we set it in Seoul for whatever reason at the time, which was an extremely poor idea. I can give you all the reasons we didn't make that film, but the real reason is it wasn't the right project and we've come up with better ones since then."

That's a bummer to hear, but anyone who is still yearning for a Wingard-Barrett action movie may not have long to wait, with Simon confirming, "We'll definitely deliver a fast paced action film with a lot of chase scenes ASAP."

Blair Witch is in theaters now.
