The seeds for the next mainline X-Men movie were firmly planted in X-Men: Apocalypse, with the studio recently confirming that the 2018 movie will follow the memorable "Dark Phoenix" storyline from the comics. We saw glimpses of this storyline in X-Men: The Last Stand, but a more fleshed-out version directed by longtime X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will arrive on November 2 of next year with Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner reprising the role of Jean Grey following her introduction in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Kinberg will make his directorial debut on the film [via Deadline], and Jessica Chastain is currently in talks to tackle her first role in a superhero movie as the film's villain, Lilandra, who was a major player in the original comics storyline. In addition to Kinberg and Chastain, series regulars James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Magneto) and Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique) will all return.

The "Dark Phoenix" saga revolves around Jean Grey, who becomes incredibly powerful and difficult to control when she is taken over by a cosmic energy called the Phoenix Force. When Fandango spoke to Kinberg shortly after Logan's release, he had this to say regarding the transition from writer-producer to director.

"My favorite thing is writing and producing the same movie. And as I think about transitioning from producing to directing, what I like is there are new challenges. I’ve been around a lot of great directors, like Ridley Scott, Bryan Singer, Kenneth Branagh and people I really respect. I’ve learned a lot from them."

Naturally the popularity of both Logan and Deadpool probably have you wondering whether Dark Phoenix will be rated R. When we asked Kinberg whether that would be the case, he couldn't confirm for certain, but seemed to be leaning more towards PG-13.

"It’s yet to be determined, but I think it’s a story that has a lot of intensity to it but isn’t necessarily as violent – or certainly people wouldn’t be swearing in the same way that Deadpool does. So we’ll see."

X-Men: Dark Phoenix hits theaters on November 2, 2018.
