Hollywood’s remake fever is still in full swing, and now the Wrap’s Jeff Sneider has taken to Twitter to break the latest film looking to get updated for a new generation. If you grew up in the ‘80s, you’re gonna want to know about this one.
According the Sneider, the 1985 cult-classic comedy Weird Science is in development at Paramount and Project X/21 Jump Street screenwriter Michael Bacall has been hired to draft the update.
The original film was written and directed by the late John Hughes, and featured Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell Smith as a pair of high school social misfits who use their computer to create a dream girl (Kelly LeBrock) who helps them overcome their lack of popularity. The original featured lots of laughs and appearances from Bill Paxton and Robert Downey Jr. and has aged pretty well for a film that’s almost three decades old.
Plans are to reenvision the original film as an “edgier R-rated comedy” in line with The Hangover. We’re not sure we’re thrilled with that idea, but the hiring of Bacall to write seems promising. The screenwriter did a decent job taking one ‘80s property – 21 Jump Street – and modernizing it without ruining it in the process. Maybe he can work the same sort of magic here.
Now that this project exists, let the casting wish lists begin! Kelly Brook seems like she’d be a pretty obvious choice to play Lisa…
