'Vertigo,' 'The Professional' and Other Films Inspiring James Mangold's 'The Wolverine'

Aug 16, 2012

Walk the Line director James Mangold has taken to Twitter where he's been revealing a few juicy tidbits about his upcoming installment in the X-Men film series and sequel to the 2009 Wolverine movie, The Wolverine. The filmmaker is currently shooting in Australia and will head to Japan next (where he's reassured he's only using native Japanese actors for the featured scenes). The most interesting part of his Twitter chats has been his inspiration for the Christopher McQuarrie and Mark Bomback screenplay, based on the 1982 series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller.

"Movies I think about as I make #TheWolverine : Eastwood's Josie Wales, Powell's Back Narcissus, Hitchcock's Rear Window, Marnie, Vertigo," Mangold wrote. "More : Ozu's Floating Weeds, Kurosawa's High & Low, Polanski's Chinatown, everything by Wong Kar Wai And Chris Doyle, Besson's Professional." Clearly he has lofty ambitions for the Marvel character, and he has promised to "do his best."

Follow the director on Twitter to keep track of future updates, but we'll bring you any major news as we get it. The Wolverine follows Logan, who begins a forbidden romance with an already engaged Japanese woman. Samurai warrior relatives — including Silver Samurai and the woman's father — don't take kindly on his advances, and Logan soon finds himself in a battle. The film hits theaters on July 26, 2013.

Additionally, here's the latest official plot synopsis for the film: "Based on the celebrated comic book arc, THE WOLVERINE finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed."
