'Transformers' Bumblebee Spinoff Moving Ahead With Christina Hodson Script

'Transformers' Bumblebee Spinoff Moving Ahead With Christina Hodson Script

Nov 11, 2016

After Paramount announced an extended Transformers movie universe last year, the studio received criticism for not including any women in the mega-franchise's writers room. They quickly fixed that by adding three female screenwriters to the bunch, which were led by producer Akiva Goldsman. Now it turns out that wasn't just for show, and the idea was proven worthwhile, because one of those women wound up writing the first spinoff, which is focused on the Autobot character Bumblebee.

According to Deadline, Bumblebee is going forward with a script by Christina Hodson, who had been one of those late additions to the Transformers brain trust. She wrote the thriller Shut In, starring Naomi Watts and young Jacob Tremblay, which opens today, as well as the reboot of The Fugitive currently in the works. Other than that, she's a relative newcomer by name as far as the public is concerned, though she's been pretty hot in Hollywood for a few years thanks to three Black List scripts.

Now Paramount is searching for a director for what has also been previously just labeled Transformers 6 (though there is another project now labeled that due in 2019). This will be the first of the franchise not helmed by Michael Bay. Could they also go with a woman for the directing gig? That would certainly be a good contrast against Bay's very masculine aesthetic. We shall see. Likely soon, because the Bumblebee movie is already set for release in less than two years, on June 8, 2018.

Before then, though, we still have another Bay-directed entry, Transformers: The Last Knight, out on June 23, 2017. That one was written by three men, Ken Nolan, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway.
