'Top Gun' Returning to Theaters in 3D

Sep 12, 2011

While we await the re-releases of Star Wars and Titanic in 3D, another iconic film has decided to put itself through the conversion machine in order to return to theaters in the third dimension. Yup, Tony Scott's 1986 flick about elite fighter pilots who play by their own rules is being converted to 3D for a re-release in early 2012, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Legend 3D, who handled the 3D work on films like Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Green Lantern, Conan the Barbarian, The Smurfs and more, is facilitating the conversion. Their CEO, Rob Hummel, claims the film "lends itself to 3D due to the aerial flight," though we think the volleyball scene is really where it's at. Who wouldn't want to watch a bunch of shirtless hunks spiking their balls in our faces in 3D?

No confirmed release date (or length of run) confirmed yet for Top Gun 3D, though we'll keep you in the loop. In the meantime ...
