'This Is the End' Creates a Fake Trailer for 'Pineapple Express 2'

Apr 01, 2013

Last summer we visited the set of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's directorial debut, the self-aware celebrities-survive-the-apocalypse comedy This Is the End, and while we're still embargoed regarding everything we learned that day, the studio has just released one of those goodies: the trailer for Pineapple Express 2.

How does Pineapple Express 2 fit into This Is the End? In the latter, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson and more all play themselves, and that means that the movies they've made in real life exist within the movie. Some of the movies they haven't made also exist, however, and one of those is Pineapple Express 2. Though we weren't shown it, it was mentioned on set that they were shooting footage for the fake movie, and here it is.

The footage itself is hardly convincing anyone that it's a real movie. It all looks to have been filmed from the inside of James Franco's house, which is where the celebs hunker down to survive the end of the world, as opposed to any real locations, giving the fake trailer an almost claustrophobic feel. Perhaps it's a plot point and they all make the movie while trapped and bored? Maybe not. Either way, kudos to Yahoo Movies for getting in on the April Fools' fun and posting this trailer as if it were a real one.
