With the debut of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 happening next month, the franchise is certainly raising its visibility level. This week we’ve been treated to new images, two new TV spots, a plethora of stars on magazine covers, and what every Twilight fan wants, new merchandise. Can billboards and product placement ads be far behind?
The new TV spots just came online yesterday, with Fandango right away capturing fan notice since they had new footage in their TV spot. Robert Pattinson’s featured line, “What’s a wedding without some drama?” was instantly quoted all over Twitter. The TV spot also featured more wolf action, with the CGI having come a long way since The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and a brief glimpse at Kellan Lutz as Emmett squaring off against the wolves.
Some new images also popped up on the Creation Entertainment website shop. Creation Entertainment runs the official Twilight convention that travels the country. Right now their biggest convention is slated for November 3-5, 2011 where most cast members will be making an appearance including Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner. Fan reaction to the images is mixed so far. Some are fine with the heavily pink-hued photoshopping, while others prefer a more natural look. The biggest hits seem to be the new solo shots of Robert Pattinson, Jackson Rathbone, and Ashley Greene. On the other hand, Peter Facinelli’s shot is widely being met with cries of “Who gave Carlisle a comb-over?”
Finally, after a dry spell over a year following the release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, there is new merchandise. Fans did get brief satisfaction over the summer when a Breaking Dawn t-shirt appeared at Hot Topic. Now, t-shirts have been joined by new jewelry, throw covers, key chains, and more.
The early-on favorite piece seems to be Bella’s wedding hair comb. Ever since the teaser appeared back in June, fans have been talking about that haircomb, and where they could snag it. The simple and understated elegance really struck a chord with many fans, as one stated, “You could wear that to prom, or a fancy dress occasion and show your Twilight love without being too obvious. It’s like an inside secret that only another true fan would get.”
Another item catching the fan eye is the "Robert Pattinson as Edward" throw. Fans have been looking for more “Edward only” items, and this fits the bill. On the other hand a number of Team Switzerland fans have talked about a perfect match of pairing a Jacob pillowcase with the Edward throw making it clear that they can have the best of both worlds.
What was entirely unexpected was the avalanche of Tweets that happened when I retweeted one fan who suggested that merchandisers were missing a very important product, a Jacob wolf plushie. “I would kill to have a Stephenie Meyer-designed Jacob plushie that wasn’t just any wolf. I’d want one that she says was her vision of Jacob,” responded one ardent fan. Clearly, there is a huge, untapped market there based on the massive number of retweets and comments back that I received. Who knows, maybe for the final film?
Now, as amazing as the wolf plushie response was, one other dream product came close in response. I tweeted, “Why don’t we have a Breaking Dawn chess set? They even pay homage to the iconic Breaking Dawn novel chess cover in the movie.” Now certainly a simple red-and-white chess set might be nice, but I started thinking about sets I’d seen for Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. I went on to suggest a themed chess set of the Cullens vs. the Volturi. Bella could be the queen on one side with Edward as her king, and Jane could be the queen for the Volturi with Aro as her king. Emmett and Jasper could be knights facing off against Demetri and Felix. The possibilities are endless. Other fans seemed to really embrace the idea. Hopefully merchandisers see the potential. With it being such an obvious fit with the cover it’s hard to see why no one has ever thought of this.
