You couldn’t pay me to watch a golf tournament to save my life, but I’d watch Netflix’s first documentary about seven-year-old golfers vying for the World Championship trophy in Junior Golf. The Pinehurst Golf Course in North Carolina is the setting for the Josh Greenbaum film The Short Game, which won the Audience Award at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin.
You probably blinked and missed its limited theatrical release in September, but on December 12, the streaming movie service will release the film for audiences at home. Over 1500 pint-sized golfers from 54 countries gather together for the competition — many of them experts in the sport while the rest of us were still playing with dolls and action figures. Based on this trailer, it’s clear the young athletes have a lot of personality and drive — minus the infidelity scandals, of course. Get to know the eight competitors highlighted in this teaser, and catch the film when it hits Netflix next month.
