'The Hobbit' Trilogy, 'They Live,' 'Sinister' and More Are Returning to Theaters

Aug 04, 2015

There are a lot of great-looking movies coming out over the next few months, including Straight Outta ComptonAmerican Ultra, The MartianCrimson Peak and Sinister 2. But if you prefer to see oldies on the big screen instead (or in addition to), we've got some listings for you to check out:

The Hobbit Extended Edition Trilogy

Just when you thought the big screen was done with Middle-earth, the last three movies in Peter Jackson's dual franchise are heading back to theaters. Parterned with Warner Bros., Fathom Events will present a three-night event beginning on Monday, October 5. That's when you can see the three-hour extended edition of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The extended cuts of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will of course follow, but maybe not until the following week (the latter is listed as showing on October 13). Each screening will also feature an exclusive introduction by Peter Jackson. A few weeks later, on November 3, the extended edition of Five Armies arrives on home video.

They Live

Alamo Drafthouse is quick to honor the work of wrestler-turned-actor Roddy Piper, who passed away late last week, with screenings of John Carpenter's 1988 cult classic They Live. The theater chain's Lakeline location in Austin is showing the movie tonight (it's already sold out) and Thursday, each one with proceeds from ticket sales going to an anti-bullying organization that Piper supported.

And each screening is sure to have everyone in attendance shout-quoting the famous "I'm all out of bubble gum" line in unison.

Sinister

With Sinister 2 making its debut this month, it makes sense that some cinemas would be hosting screenings of the original. But Gramercy Pictures has something bigger planned called "Sinister Weekends." Beginning this Saturday, the distributor is presenting midnight screenings of a handful of horror movies selected by the makers of Sinister 2. Plus the first Sinister

The schedule and reasons for includsion are as follows:

August 8 & 9: The Ring, chosen by screenwriter C. Robert Cargill, who says it gave him a literal nightmare that inspired him to write the first Sinister.

August 15 & 16: The Devil's Backbone, Let the Right One In and Night of the Living Dead, all personal favorites picked by Sinister 2 director Ciaran Foy, representing his biggest influences on his career overall.

August 22 & 23: Sinister, which is playing the weekend that its sequel opens. So maybe see that Saturday night then see the new one on Sunday.

Back to the Future Trilogy and The Iron Giant

Here's your reminder that Back to the FutureBack to the Future Part II and Back to the Future Part III are back on the big screen in October. And your reminder that Brad Bird's The Iron Giant will be back in theaters next month.

Be sure to regularly check the Fathom Events listings because classics are always showing up for short-term re-releases. For instance, TCM is presenting a Grease sing-a-long this month, Psycho in September, Dracula in October, Roman Holiday in November and Miracle on 34th Street in December.
