After years of false production starts, The Hobbit finally found its solid green light earlier this year. Of course, since then director Peter Jackson and company have hardly been producing the film in secret. They've been embracing their rabid fanbase with a big presence on the web, regularly releasing production diaries, behind-the-scene photos, and even embedding a journalist on their set, but Lord of the Rings fans, the proud legion of middle earth junkies they are, have still been clamoring to get their big fix in the form of the film's first trailer. Today is that day.
There's been plenty of speculation about what would actually be in the trailer, and we even spied it earlier this month, though we were sworn to secrecy about what was actually in it, but today the shroud of mystery is lifted and all can bask in its glory and begin memorizing the solemn song of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Apple has the official HD premiere, or watch it in the player below.
So, what do you think? Is it everything you were hoping for? Does seeing Bag End again give you the same goosebumps the Fellowship of the Ring trailer gave you over ten years ago? How great is Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins? (The only correct answer is really, really great.) What about the crisp, digital look of the film? Are you warming to its sharp aesthetic or do you prefer the more filmic look of the original trilogy?
Oh, and if you want to wait to catch this bad boy on the big screen and in 3D, it should be attached to the Peter Jackson-produced The Adventures of Tintin this weekend.
