2013 is shaping up to be a big year for Melissa McCarthy. The breakout star of last year’s comedy Bridesmaids is already appearing in The Hangover 3 and costarring alongside Jason Bateman in Identity Thief. If that’s not enough for you, she’ll also be reteaming with Bridesmaids’ director Paul Feig for The Heat.
We’ve got the first trailer for the cop comedy, which finds street-smart detective McCarthy teaming up with a by-the-book FBI agent played by Sandra Bullock. The film isn’t likely to become a box office juggernaut, but it does look entertaining enough. McCarthy and Bullock seem to have real chemistry and the whole thing plays sort of like a gender-reversed riff on movies like Lethal Weapon – only with way more laughs and a lot less testosterone and violence.
Check out the official synopsis for all your story detail needs:
“Uptight and straight-laced [sic], FBI Special Agent Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is a methodical investigator with a reputation for excellence–and hyper-arrogance. Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), one of Boston P.D.’s “finest,” is foul-mouthed and has a very short fuse, and uses her gut instinct and street smarts to catch the most elusive criminals. Neither has ever had a partner, or a friend for that matter. When these two wildly incompatible law officers join forces to bring down a ruthless drug lord, they become the last thing anyone expected: buddies. From Paul Feig, the director of Bridesmaids.”
The Heat heads out on patrol starting April 5, 2013.
