'The Circle' Trailer: Emma Watson Falls for Tom Hanks' Cult-Like Tech Company

Emma Watson the Circle

Every decade gets its own wave of movies, usually thrillers, built around whatever technology is grabbing headilnes at the time. In the '80s it was all about robots (Runaway, Chopping Mall, Short Circuit, RoboCop). In the '90s it was all about the personal computing revolution (The Net, You've Got Mail, HackersBrainscan). The 2000s were about mobile tech (One Missed Call, Cellular, Swordfish, even The Dark Knight has a huge cell phone-related subplot). And now in 2010 we're moving into movies all about live streaming.

Recently we've gotten a trio of web video thrillers that are all better than you'd expect (The Den, Unfriended, Nerve), and now a bunch of your favorite people are joining that list. The Circle stars Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, Karen Gillan, John Boyega, Bill Paxton, Ellen Wong, Ellar Coltrane, Nate Corddry and Patton Oswalt. It's based on the best selling novel from Dave Eggars and is directed by James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now, The End of the Tour).

So what is The Circle? The first trailer is a bit cryptic about what's going on, but it's a giant tech company run by Hanks' character. Imagine if Google had the obsessive cult-like following of Apple and that's basically The Circle. Emma Watson plays a new employee who joins the company right before they launch a revolutionary new camera technology called SeeChange that wants to fix the world by putting everyone under constant video surveillance that can be accessed by the public. The logic here is that if no one has any secrets, the world will become a better place. As you can probably guess, that doesn't work out well for everyone.

Check it out.

The Circle hits theaters on April 28, 2017.
