Most major Hollywood studios have moved away from handmade animation and have converted entirely to computer animation. That doesn't mean that the traditional techniques are extinct everywhere, however. One studio that keeps this old-school form of movie magic alive is Laika. It employs the minds behind Coraline and ParaNorman, two of the finest animated films from the last five years. Laika is hoping to keep that quality steak going with The Boxtrolls, hitting theaters September 26, 2014.
Adapted from Alan Snow's kids novel Here Be Monsters!, Laika's latest film is about a young, orphaned boy who is secretly adopted by a family of gentle creatures who live in a city's trash. Yep, sounds like a good match for the outfit that backed Coraline and ParaNorman alright.
Directed by Graham Annable* and Anthony Stacchi, The Boxtrolls features the incredibly talented voices of Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg, Toni Collette, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Richard Ayode and Ben Kingsley (playing an exterminator who is trying to kill the titular creatures). Do check out the endearing, heartwarming teaser trailer below (thanks to The Film Stage for the embed), and below that you'll find a behind-the-scenes video from ParaNorman showcasing the kinds of technique that Laika is keeping alive.
*Fun fact for the geeks out there: Graham Annable was an animator on the classic Lucas Arts adventure games The Dig and Full Throttle.
