'The Avengers: Age of Ultron' Casts One More Villain in Thomas Kretschmann

Jan 15, 2014

If you're a handsome actor with good English but a German accent good luck playing anything other than a villain in a Hollywood movie. Not that we're entirely complaining. Who doesn't love a good, stereotypical European bad guy that's well dressed, has impeccable posture, a formidable jawline, and loves to torture the American hero? At least Joss Whedon does, and he's hoping you agree, because he's just cast Thomas Kretschmann in The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Now before you ask, yes, the artificially intelligent robot Ultron (played by James Spader) is still the main villain of the movie named after him, but Kretschmann - who most may best recognize as the boat captain in Peter Jackson's King Kong - will also be giving the men in tights a bit of a headache as Baron Wolfgang von Strucker. In the comics, von Strucker was one of the heads of HYDRA, the Nazi-esque group that consistently gave Captain America and S.H.I.E.L.D. such a hard time.

We don't know how exactly von Strucker fits into the larger story involving Ultron, as Whedon appears to be abandoning that character's own comic origins, but then again, why would we want to know this early on? The film still doesn't come out until May 1, 2015, so there's still more than enough time for geeky speculation. Feel free to jump on all of that below.
