Get out your calendars – we’ve got lots of release date changes this week, including new dates for some highly-anticipated titles.
Everyone’s favorite Heroes in a Half-Shell will be back on the big screen when Paramount unveils the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film on Christmas Day in the year 2013. Clearly, the studio has high hopes for the return of the Turtles – the Christmas opening slot is generally reserved for prestige films looking to garner attention for awards season and family fare expected to do huge business. We’re pretty surprised by this placement, but hopefully it means Paramount is going all out on the newest Ninja Turtles adventure. Turtle power, indeed.
Meanwhile, One Shot – Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie’s mystery-thriller based on Lee Child’s novel of the same name – is ready to debut on December 21st of this year. This is the first entry in what Paramount hopes will become a franchise, with Cruise playing Child’s recurring character Jack Reacher.
Not to be outdone, Sony/Columbia revealed new dates for two of their heavy hitters as well.
Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers, the sequel to the popular family film Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, has locked in a holiday 2013 release date – opening on December 20th. If this holds, it’ll be going head-to-head with the Ninja Turtles.
If family fare isn’t your bag, then perhaps a remake of Robocop is more your speed. Jose Padilha’s updating of the cult classic is now penciled in for an August 9th release in the year 2013. So far away…
Other films are also on the move, all of them moving back from their previous announced releases.
Zombie epic World War Z has shifted from Christmas 2012 to June 21st of 2013.
Finally, Summit’s action-thriller The Cold Light of Day – starring Bruce Willis, Sigourney Weaver, and Henry Cavill – was slated to open next month, but will now make its debut on September 7th.
