Although Venom had his day in the cinemas with an appearance in Spider-Man 3, the popular Marvel Comics villain and sometime antihero has been teased as getting his own movie for many years. Sony has just gone the extra step in making it finally happen by setting a release date for the spinoff, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Here's what we know so far:
Will this movie be spun from the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming?
No. Venom is completely separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, of which Spidey is now part.
Will it be related to any Spider-Man movies?
While previously the character was set to get a spinoff from the Amazing Spider-Man run, it appears Venom will now be standing totally alone from his famous nemesis and is expected to kick off is own franchise.
Is there any possibility of it following any other movies at all?
Well, there is a crazy fan theory going around this week that Sony's upcoming sci-fi thriller Life is actually a secret prequel to a Venom movie due to it being about a mysterious deadly alien organism and featuring a recycled shot lifted from Spider-Man 3.
Does Venom have a director yet?
No. At the moment the movie is still in the scripting stage, with the latest version being penned by Scott Rosenberg (Con Air) and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). They could be working off a previous draft by Dante Harper (Alien: Covenant).
But it does have a release date?
Yes. Venom will arrive in theaters in just over a year and a half, on October 5, 2018.
