'Seven Psychopaths' Trailer Brings Out the "Crazy" in Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken and More

Aug 14, 2012

Martin McDonagh is not yet a household name, but with only two films under his belt and an Oscar nomination for each, the writer-director has a better track record than most filmmakers who are.

His first short film, Six Shooter, won the Oscar in 2006 for Best Live-Action Short Film. From there he moved up to features, with his debut film In Bruges earning him another Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. And now he's got a third film under his belt, Seven Psychopaths.

Will it earn him yet a third Oscar nomination? It's hard to tell based off of a single trailer, but considering the cast includes Colin Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Tom Waits, Gabourey Sidibe and Abbie Cornish, we're going to guess he's got a decent shot. The plot, involving an L.A. screenwriter (Farrell) getting involved with the criminal underworld after kidnapping a gangster's dog, has a strange '90s vibe to it; like something you'd see on Comedy Central on a Saturday night. That's not entirely a bad thing -- we love bumbling crime comedies with ensemble casts -- but it certainly looks a bit broader in tone than the sharp and biting melancholy of In Bruges.

Seven Psychopaths hits theaters on October 12, 2012, but you can catch it a few weeks earlier at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it'll be playing under the Midnight Madness banner, which should give you some idea as to how dark and twisted this may get.
