'Piranha 3DD' Going Straight to DVD in UK; Still Set to Ravage a Water Park in US Theaters This Spring

Jan 03, 2012

The world wept when fishy favorite Piranha 3DD was pushed into vague release date territory just a few months ago. Would we ever be enlightened by the extreme water park antics that a pack of killer piranha would enact upon the co-ed population? When would we get to see Gary Busey and a farting, exploding cow? Written by Saw scribes Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, and directed by Feast filmmaker John Gulager, Piranha 3DD isn't a wash — but UK audiences won't be treated to a big-screen showing. The movie will be making its way to DVD/Blu-ray on March 19 — a disappointment if you were hoping to bask in the glory of David Hasselhoff's chest hair while fondling your buttery popcorn.

Meanwhile, Melton caught up with Daily Dead to dish up the U.S. theatrical details. Apparently the writing team was "overly optimistic" about a Thanksgiving release.

"Making the film within that time period is plausible (we’ve done it on Saw, obviously), but it became clear very early on that our goals were not realistic because we needed sun, water slides, and bikini-clad coeds … three things not very prevalent in the United States during the months of January and February. We initially scouted Louisiana and realized that we wouldn’t be able to shoot until late March because of the cold weather."

On a positive note, the studio has provided the feature with more money for special effects improvements after the film passed a screen test with flying colors. "Scenes, jokes, and kills were simply enhanced to make the movie more of an event. About a month ago, it was tested and scored very well. So well the studio gave us more money to enhance the FX."

Melton is promising audiences a bloody Spring Break treat come hell or high water. "Soon, it’ll be done and ready for a theatrical release. Because of the “Spring Break vibe” in the film, spring was the obvious time to open it. And because Dimension Films financed the movie and owns the movie, they call the shots on when it’s released worldwide."

There you have it. When the bunny rabbits see their shadow (or something), Piranha 3DD will be ready to gnash teeth and invade bikinis everywhere.
