'John Wick' TV Series Will Expand the Movie's World, May Feature Keanu Reeves

Jun 15, 2017

The very awesome John Wick: Chapter 2 just arrived on home video this week, meaning more viewers are about to become further invested in the world built by the Keanu Reeves-led action-movie series. They'll be looking forward to more John Wick, and fortunately for them, there's another sequel and a spin-off TV series in development. Here's what we know about both:

When is John Wick: Chapter 3 coming out?

The third movie installment hasn't officially been green-lit yet, so there's no release date, but as we heard recently, the hope is for production to start at the end of this year or beginning of 2018. We're guessing an early 2019 arrival.

What will it be about?

Without spoiling John Wick: Chapter 2, there seems to be a pretty clear course for where Chapter 3 needs to go. Earlier this year, Reeves shared his ideas, including an escape from New York by his titular character and a war between different parts of the assassin's underworld set up by these movies.

Chad Stahelski, who is currently expected to return to direct, only stated his focus is "to show you more of the intricacies of the world."

Will the TV show continue the story after the three movies?

Actually, the show will be a prequel.

Will it follow a recast John Wick during his early days as a hit man?

No, in fact Reeves is possibly going to make an appearance.

Just an appearance? Isn't this John Wick: The Series?

The series will be titled The Continental.

Oh, so it's about that larger world beautifully built by the movies?

Yes. Stahelski tells IndieWire its focus is on the "cool, Wick-ian, magical and mysterious world" of its namesake hotel on a global scale. He continues:

It’s very tied to the film [in that] it’s about the Continentals all over the world, how certain people come into that world, and what happens in relation to those people, which is cool. I think the world is very vast, and everything I’ve heard from it is very positive.

If not Wick, who will be the main character of The Continental

You could probably assume the show would center around Lance Reddick's character, Charon, the New York Continental's concierge. But Stahelski says:

I like telling stories from my one character’s perspective. Once you put that aside with the TV show, [you can] expand to all the different characters and follow them throughout their journey. You can be with the consigliere, concierge, the sommelier — you can be with all these different characters and walk through the world in different aspects; ones that I’m a little limited [from exploring] by staying with my lead guy.

What kind of scale and budget and level of quality should we expect from The Continental?

Stahelski has aspirations. He looks to Game of Thrones for an example of great action on the small screen. He says:

Granted, they’re the biggest budgeted show on TV right now, but could we do something interesting with John Wick with what we have? Yeah. I’d like to give it a go and prove to the TV world that you can have feature action on a TV show. It would be a nice little feather in my cap, sure.

So when is the show going to premiere?

That, like the third movie, is unknown. Lionsgate is developing it with an unrevealed writer but hasn't green-lit a pilot let alone the whole series yet. Perhaps the studio can get it on our screens as early as 2019, though.

For now, if you haven't already, check out John Wick and John Wick: Chapter 2 and become as obsessed with the world it builds as we are.
