Following on the heels of a poster debut comes this new trailer for Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise as a former Army cop turned drifter who plays by his own rules, which seems to include lots of ass-kicking. Based on the series of Jack Reacher novels, this first film (in what could become a franchise should the box office deem it worthy) is based on the 2005 novel One Shot, which finds Reacher on the hunt to prove a serial killer's guilt after the man claims he's innocent by offering up one note: "Get Jack Reacher."
This two-and-a-half-minute trailer gives us a much longer look at what's in store for the adaptation, which fans are already criticizing due to the fact that Cruise looks nothing like the towering menace described in the books. In response, author Lee Child has been quoted as saying, "Reacher's size in the books is a metaphor for an unstoppable force, which Cruise portrays in his own way."
The Jack Reacher from the books is quietly menacing, and while this trailer shows off a character who seems similar to the one from the books, it's hard to cast Tom Cruise in a movie and not make him charismatic. I mean, the man is one of the most charismatic actors working today, so asking him to remain silent for two hours is sort of a hard thing to do.
Regardless of how faithful this is or isn't to the book and/or the character, the trailer definitely proves this isn't another Mission: Impossible movie. This is somewhat darker and moodier; we almost get a '70s action-movie vibe in a few of the scenes. The film looks like it wants to be both an intriguing detective story and a flashy action movie, and we're curious to see if it can pull it off.
Jack Reacher hits theaters on December 21.
