team of James Wan and Leigh Whannell will be returning to their demonic, astral tale Insidious
— according to Coming Soon
. The first film followed a couple (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) and their comatose son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) who was tormented by lost souls in another dimension known as the Further. So far, we know that Insidious Chapter 2
will hit theaters on August 30 and that Wilson, Byrne, Simpkins and Lin Shaye will be returning for the sequel. Shaye played paranormal expert Elise Reiner. She helps the family understand Dalton's unique ability and reveals Josh's (Wilson) ability to astral project like his son.
Whannell will be scripting the project again with producer Jason Blum back in business, too. Paranormal Activity
creator Oren Peli is one of several exec producers on the film that begins production in January. Last month
, we brought news from Wan who was excited to get rolling on part two and wants to be more involved with the story — unlike Saw.
He also indicated there are plenty of new directions to take with the follow-up:
"I think the sequel to Insidious is kind of my reaction to Saw where for my own reason I wasn’t as involved in the sequels, and so I felt with Insidious it would be good to shepherd it and keep it more in track to the version I had when I made the first film so that it doesn’t detour too far. So yeah, I’m kind of working with Leigh on the story and the script… I always felt with Insidious we created this really interesting world that we can explore more, and so even though we didn’t set out to make a sequel, I felt that there are stories still out there that could be told."
Does this mean we'll get to spend more time in the Further and meet a few more terrifying characters? Let us know what you'd like to see more of in Chapter 2.
