Brad Bird's new animated adventure soared on the big screen. Over the weekend, Incredibles 2 earned an estimated $180 million at the box office, per CNN Money, absolutely smashing the record for animated titles previously held by Finding Dory, which made $135 million during its opening frame in 2016.

Taking international openings into account, as well as its domestic earnings, the film has grossed some $231.5 million worldwide so far. It's the third biggest opening of the year, behind Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther, two Marvel superhero offerings that were also released by Disney.

The success of Incredibles 2 points back to the original film's enduring popularity. Even though it's been some 14 years since The Incredibles was first released, the distinctive combination of cheeky humor, family fun and superhero action has retained a strong hold on the collective memory of moviegoers.

The sequel provides a great opportunity for those moviegoers to introduce the next generation to the Parr family, led by Mr. Incredible (voiced by Craig T. Nelson) and Elastigirl (voiced by Holly Hunter). Their exploits are relatable, even if their superpowers remain wish fulfillment for the rest of us.

The remaining top earners at the weekend box office, according to Box Office Mojo, include Ocean's 8, Tag, Solo: A Star Wars Story and Deadpool 2. Also notable: horror drama Hereditary continues to do well, while the fantasy tale A Wrinkle in Time has now earned more than $100 million domestically.

Coming up later this week: Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. It's the only new, wide theatrical release and has already earned more than $370 million in a variety of international territories.
