Olivier Dahan’s award-winning biopic about French chanteuse Édith Piaf was lauded for Marion Cotillard’s astonishing performance. The director has set Nicole Kidman center stage for his next biographical work featuring a riveting woman in Grace of Monaco, and a full trailer for the film has finally arrived.
Kidman is no stranger to real-life inspired stories, having played photographer of “freaks" Diane Arbus in Steven Shainberg’s Fur. Now, Kidman dons a tiara and ball gown to star as the early thirtysomething actress turned princess who captured the heart of a nation. Dahan’s movie takes place during the early 1960s when Grace Kelly married Monaco’s Prince Rainier III, played by a devilish Tim Roth.
Some biographers have called Rainier explosive, controlling and even violent. The film also introduces the tax dispute between Rainier and France's Charles De Gaulle, who at one point surrounded Monaco with troops and threatened to cut off the community’s water supply. We also get a sense of the royal couple’s tension over Grace’s film career, which included a series of pictures for Hitchcock. Frank Langella, Derek Jacobi, Paz Vega, Parker Posey and Milo Ventimiglia also star in the film, which will make its Cannes Film Festival debut on March 14.
