'Gambit' Gets a Release Date; Here's What We Know So Far

Oct 13, 2017

Logan Lucky
20th Century Fox’s standalone Gambit film was originally scheduled for a 2016 release. Obviously, that did not happen and fans of the card-throwing superhero have been wondering if and when they would ever see his big-screen adventure. Well, good news. Deadline reports that come Valentine’s Day 2019 you can have a date with Gambit! Let’s go over everything we know about this anticipated movie so far:
Who is Gambit?
Gambit is a mutant with the ability to create and harness kinetic energy. One of his signature moves is charging playing cards with said energy and throwing them at his enemies to explosive results. He is also known as Remy LeBeau, hails from Louisiana, and speaks with a Cajun accent. Gambit was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Jim Lee. He made his on-page debut in Uncanny X-Men Annual #14 in July 1990.
Who will play Gambit?
Channing Tatum (above in Logan Lucky). You can already picture it, right? Tatum has been attached for a couple of years and is also a producer on the film. This will be Tatum’s first live-action superhero role; he has voiced Superman in The LEGO Movie series. We’ve also seen him in numerous action roles over the years: G.I. JoeHaywire and White House Down, to name a few.
How will this tie into the X-Men Cinematic Universe?
This is expected to be Gambit’s solo debut and origin story. It is still part of the X-Men Cinematic Universe, but we don’t know to what extent he will interact with any of the other mutants. Producer Lauren Shuler Donner has said she’d “hypothetically” love to see him cross paths with Deadpool and Wolverine one day.
We have actually already seen Wolverine and Gambit together in the X-Men Cinematic Universe. In X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) Logan tracks down LeBeau in New Orleans, plays a round of cards and then takes a round of cards to the chest. Taylor Kitsch portrayed Gambit on that one and only occasion. It’s a brief appearance, but you get a taste of his kinetic prowess and bo staff skills.
Who is directing this one?
Gore Verbinski, who delivered A Cure for Wellness earlier this year, is set to direct. Verbinkski is best known for helming the first three entries in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean series. He has dabbled in various genres over the years (everything from the Oscar-winning, 3D-animated Western Rango to the popular death-by-videotape horror flick The Ring), but Gambit would be his first superhero film.
What is known about the plot?
We do not know any specifics. Joshua Zetumer (screenwriter of 2014’s RoboCop and Patriots Day) is responsible for the script. Tatum recently said "We were trying to do something completely different. ... We kept running into the same problems, and then Deadpool and Logan came through and kicked the doors down. Now we’re really getting to do some of the things we’ve always wanted to do with the script -- we’ve just sort of started over.” Might this mean we’re in store for an R-rated Gambit film? We hope so and we’ll certainly keep you posted.
When does it come out?
Gambit is now slated for release on February 14, 2019.
