Finders Keepers documentary

Finders Keepers, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year, is without doubt one of the best movies of 2015. That's why it's a bit of a bummer how hard it is to tell just how funny and tragic, how surreal and insightful this miracle of a story is from the trailer that just hit online. But that's understandable, because it's not an easy movie or story to sell in a two-and-a-half minutes.

Finders Keepers unravels the increasingly bizarre true story of a man who found a human foot inside a BBQ grill that was inside a storage unit that they bought at auction. But this isn't a murder mystery. We know right away who the foot came from. The question the movie investigates is who the foot belongs to in a legal and ethical sense.

That may not sound all that funny, but what Finders Keepers does so masterfully is find the humor in a story that is just so dang cosmically unreal it feels like a crazy person had to make it up. The man who lost the foot and the man who found it are true characters, each flawed in their own ways, with tremendous senses of humor and motivation. Their colliding worlds become this slow motion crash that keeps escalating in ways that are deeply funny and tragic and oh so human.

Like I said, that's a hard thing to convey in under 3 minutes, but please believe me when I say this: If you give Finders Keepers 82 minutes of your time when it comes out on September 25, 2015, you will have one of the best experiences you can watching a movie all year long. It is unbelievably good.
