'Fantastic Four' Reboot Gets a Release Date, While 'Alice in Wonderland' Gets a Sequel

Dec 10, 2012

Two tentpole movies are on the horizon — one stems from a major box office hit, while the other is a big fan favorite (at least in comic book form) that finally has an end date in sight. One of the youngest directors to break box office history was Josh Trank of Chronicle fame. He directed Max Landis' sci-fi film about high school students with superpowers. While we still don't know if Trank will return for the Chronicle sequel in development at Fox, we do know that the up-and-coming director is behind the reboot of the Fantastic Four storyline. That film now has a release date, according to Coming Soon, and it's March 6, 2015.
This is Trank's opportunity to make right what 2005's Fantastic Four and 2007's Rise of the Silver Surfer dropped the ball on — apart from Michael Chiklis as Ben Grimm/the Thing, of course. In an interview with Fantastic Four writer Mark Millar a few months ago, the comic scribe spoke about his excitement over Trank's participation in the upcoming film. "Hiring Josh Trank for Fantastic Four… it could just not be more different than the first Fantastic Four movie from what I’ve seen so far. Even just as a fan, I’m very, very excited by the level of talent they have on the directors side of things."
Although we're not surprised by this next bit of news, we do wonder why it took so long for Disney to spawn a sequel to the obnoxious, 3D Tim Burton movie that kicked off an entire series of Hollywood takes on fairy-tale fantasy worlds. The billion-dollar, 2010 Alice in Wonderland is due for a follow-up and we'll see Disney writer Linda Woolverton behind the script for Alice in Wonderland 2 — she also wrote the original Burton monstrosity.
No other details were revealed by Variety, but will Burton return to the story since his next project is still up in the air? There is that Robert Downey Jr. Pinocchio film developing that could steal him away, but Alice was such a massive cash-in for studio and director, we imagine Disney is trying its best to reel him back in. Does that also mean Johnny Depp will make a comeback?
Lament the sequel news, below, and chime in with any thoughts about Fantastic Four.
