Hugh Bonneville in Downton Abbey

Before we get started with today’s news, I have to confess that I’ve never seen Downton Abbey. In fact, like most ignorant Americans, I thought it was “Downtown Abbey” until the Golden Globes show a few weeks back. That being said, here’s some news that will certainly make sense to fans of the show.

Hugh Bonneville is the latest actor (following in the footsteps of Jessica Brown-Findlay, amongst others) to parlay the British drama’s success into paying big screen work. IndieWire says Bonneville has been tapped to play the lead role in the upcoming adaptation of Peter James’ bestselling novel Dead Simple.

Television’s Earl of Grantham will play detective Roy Grace in the film – which finds the sleuth searching for a groom who’s been buried alive as part of a bachelor party prank. The kicker is that his friends are killed in a head-on collision before they can unearth the groom-to-be and it’s up to Roy to unravel the mystery…because of course there’s a twist.

James, who was a producer and film financier before morphing into a novelist, is putting his producer’s cap back on for this feature. No director has been hired to date, although this isn’t the first attempt to bring Grace to the screen. British television and even Roman Polanksi have considered adapting James’s work in the past, but none of those attempts have come to fruition. Perhaps the author’s personal involvement will help get things up and running this time out.
