If you're already anticipating the loss of Donald Glover in the fifth season of Community — the actor will only appear in five of the 13 Dan Harmon eps — here's a short film featuring the rapper-comedian, which he also wrote and produced. Directed by Hiro Murai, Clapping for the Wrong Reasons offers a day in the life peek at Glover's alter ego Childish Gambino — a moniker he adopted in college from an online Wu-Tang name generator.
There are two versions of the short — an "Internet" cut, which is rather surreal, and a director's cut, about 25 minutes long (also with a loose narrative, but slightly more coherent). Costars include musicians like Chance the Rapper, Trinidad James and Flying Lotus, porn star Abella Anderson, and Boy Meets World's Danielle Fishel, who picks fruit from a tree while discussing her strange dreams. The film is bookended by an odd phone call from a bill collector who could double as a character in a David Lynch film, à la Lost Highway's Mystery Man (Robert Blake).
