Entertainment Weekly shared some exclusive photos of the upcoming Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt romantic drama By the Sea. It’s the couple’s first on-screen collaboration since they met working on Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2005, and it’s Jolie’s third time in the director’s chair. She also wrote the film and is producing (with Pitt coproducing).

Jolie and Pitt are newlyweds, but the film centers on a couple at the end of their rope who take a vacation in order to save their marriage. The film is set in France during the mid-1970s in a quiet, seaside town. Jolie plays a former dancer named Vanessa, while Pitt plays husband Roland, an American writer.

“As a kind of found-family is assembled amid these maritime dwellers, histories are shared—some joyful, some mournful—and the couple are swept up in their stories, changing the way they look at each other,” EW shares. “I chose to set By the Sea in the 1970s, not only because it is a colorful and alluring era, but because it removes many of the distractions of contemporary life and allows the focus to remain squarely on the emotions that the characters experience in their journey,” Jolie told EW. The website also revealed that cinematographer Christian Berger (Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon) will be filming using natural and existing light to create an intimate environment.

By the Sea started shooting in Malta on September 8 and will remain in the southern European island country through mid-November.
