Bad Boys II

The long-awaited third installment in an action-crime series, Bad Boys for Life has been set for release by Sony Pictures in 2020, according to The Wrap. The project has been long in development, so let's catch up with everything we know.

Who will star?

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence will reprise their roles as Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, respectively, police detectives in Miami.

Who will direct?

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. They began in the Belgian film industry with the acclaimed action-crime movie Black in 2015 and, more recently, Gangsta. They've also directed two episodes of TV's Snowfall, a drug drama.

When did all this begin?

We heard that producer Jerry Bruckheimer was developing a script in 2011, which was slowed by scheduling issues in 2013. Joe Carnahan (The A-Team, Stretch) came on board to write the script and possibly direct in 2015.

Carnahan and Smith both expressed enthusiasm for the project, which was titled Bad Boys for Life. The release date got pushed back, with Carnahan at the helm, but the director moved on last year and we haven't heard much since then.

Remind me about the original film.

Back in 1995, Martin Lawrence toplined Bad Boys, costarring Will Smith, then primarily known as the star of TV sitcom The Prince of Bel-Air. The two played Miami police detectives who were charged with protecting a witness while investigating a drug case. Michael Bay, making his feature directorial debut, injected appropriate style and flash into an otherwise agreeable action picture, while Lawrence and Smith proved to be a very fun pair of cops.

Audiences liked it far more than critics, as scores on Rotten Tomatoes suggest. The film earned $141 million at the box office worldwide, against a very modest $19 million production budget.

What made the second installment so wild?

Smith, having cemented his stardom with Independence Day and Men in Black, took top billing in the sequel, but his brotherly chemistry with Lawrence remained the same. What really made the difference was director Michael Bay.

Coming off the monstrous success of The Rock, Armageddon and Pearl Harbor, Bay's instinct for outlandish action sequences spiralled into wildly imaginative proportions, aided by the film's far, far larger budget (reportedly $130 million). Though the film earned more than $273 million worldwide, it wasn't as big a financial success as the original, and its critical reaction was quite rough. Still, audiences ate up its action-comedy exuberance.

When can we see it?

Sony has scheduled Bad Boys for Life for theatrical release on January 17, 2020.
