With an all-star cast featuring Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Ewan McGregor (and that’s just for starters…), one would expect August: Osage County to get some serious awards buzz next year. That could still happen, but the first trailer for John Wells’ new film feels awfully familiar to us.
The dramedy, based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning play, features enough star power to create a new galaxy – so why does the whole thing look so ho-hum? Your guess is as good as ours, but if this trailer is truly representative of the finished product, then August: Osage County looks more like awards bait than an actual contender.
Stop us if you’ve heard this before: a dysfunctional family comes together at the funeral for the family patriarch and all the tensions and drama of the past and present boil to the surface. That’s August: Osage County as presented in this clip. Sure, it’s always fun to watch Streep give us another accent – and we’re sure the grand dame of American acting will get serious consideration for her work in this feature (because that’s what happens pretty much every year now), but everything else feels like it was ripped straight out of a Tyler Perry movie. All that’s missing is Madea.
While it’s not entirely fair to judge a film from a two-and-a-half-minute clip, we have to say we’re a little bit disappointed with what we’ve seen from August: Osage County so far. With this level of acting talent assembled in one feature, we expected more. We’ll have to wait until November 8 (right in the heart of awards season) to find out if our early impressions were accurate or not. Until then, check out the trailer and let us know what you think.
