'Anomalisa' Trailer Shows Off One of The Most Beautiful Movies of 2015

Nov 02, 2015

Anomalisa is one of the most interesting, emotionally complex and heartfelt movies of 2015. It also happens to be a stop-motion animated movie written and co-directed by Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) that takes place almost entirely in a hotel and features countless characters who all have the same face and voice. Basically, it is not an easy movie to sell in a trailer that's only 120 seconds long.

That said, the first trailer for Anomalisa does a tremendous job of showing off the beautiful and unique animation. It taps in to the movie's core theme - about so desperately wanting to find another human to connect with - in an easily understandable way, and it leaves you wanting to see more. However, it's also not a wholly accurate reflection of the movie's tone.

Anomalisa is indeed funny, but it's also a somber, thoughtful, introspective movie about depression and an inability to be human, to be the person other people want you to be. You don't really see that side of it here, which is a good thing but may just be setting people up for an overall different movie than what Kaufman and his co-director Duke Johnson crafted. Either way, we highly recommend you check it out when it hits theaters on December 30, 2015.
