'Annabelle' Star and 'Jurassic World''s Jake Johnson Touted to Join Tom Cruise in 'The Mummy'

Annabelle / Tom Cruise

The first installment in a series of interconnected movies featuring Universal's classic monsters is shaping up nicely. The Mummy has secured Tom Cruise to star, Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) to portray the titular character and Robert Kurtzman to direct, based on a script by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus).

Now the movie, set in the modern day, is closing in on the apparent female lead, as well as a guy to lighten the mood. Annabelle Wallis, who starred in the horror thriller Annabelle (above, left) is in talks to join the cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Additionally, Jurassic World star Jake Johnson will join the ensemble as a member of the military. Cruise will, reportedly, play either a current or former special forces soldier, while Wallis would portray a scientist.

We all know who Johnson is at this point -- if you've missed one of his many movie roles, then you've no doubt laughed watching him in The New Girl.

Wallis, meanwhile, acquitted herself well in that spin-off from The Conjuring, though a better showcase for her talents is probably the British television show Peaky Blinders. Set in England after World War I, the series revolves around a nasty gang of criminals led by Cillian Murphy. Wallis appeared as an undercover agent deployed against the gang; she is charged with the dangerous task of gathering information while working as a barmaid in a drinking establishment owned by Murphy's family.

Wallis will next appear in The Brothers Grimsby, due out later this week -- watch the clip below for a bit of raunchy bathroom humor, opposite Sacha Baron Cohen -- and she will have a substantial role in Guy Ritchie's Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur, fighting it out with Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law and Eric Bana. It's scheduled for release on March 24, 2017.

The Mummy is set to open in theaters wide on June 9, 2017, so expect a few more announcements in the coming weeks to round out the supporting cast.
